About Project
The HPC PERUN Project represents a strategic initiative aimed at building a modern next-generation computing infrastructure.
The Technical University of Košice, based on a direct invitation from the Government of the Slovak Republic, has joined the project “Development and Construction of a Supercomputer for the National Supercomputing Centre” (project code 17I03-04-P03), funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic.
The provider of the project is the Ministry of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization of the Slovak Republic (MIRRI SR).
The main objective of the project is the development and construction of a supercomputer for the National Supercomputing Centre, which will be located at the data centre site of the Technical University of Košice.
Its mission is to strengthen the national capacity for scientific research, technological innovation, and artificial intelligence development in Slovakia.
Project Initiation and System Design
The project began in 2024, with the first phase focusing on the design of the supercomputer architecture, the selection of computing components, and the tuning of technical parameters to achieve high performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
Construction and Infrastructure Expansion
Starting in early 2025, extensive renovation and reconstruction works were carried out at the Institute of Computer Technology of the Technical University of Košice (TUKE) to prepare the premises for the installation of the new HPC infrastructure.
The data center was expanded with a dedicated room for the supercomputer, equipped with a raised floor with high load capacity, an air recuperation system, and precision cooling of interior spaces. The modifications also included a humidity control system, ensuring an optimal microclimate for the continuous operation of computing equipment.
In addition, new technical rooms were built to house the cooling systems, power distribution units, and backup battery systems, ensuring reliability and redundancy of the entire operation.
External Infrastructure
In the outdoor areas of the Institute, STULZ cooling units (chillers) and a 900 kVA CGM motor generator were installed, providing a backup power source for the entire HPC system.
Technology Installation
Starting on 8 September 2025, the installation of the supercomputer and related technologies was carried out by HPE, EVIDEN, CISCO, and NetApp — global leaders in high-performance computing and data storage technologies.
